To Stand in Awe of the Lord

Arms reaching to God in the sunsetMalachi 2:1-9

The life and service of Phinehas, which all priests who followed were to emulate, turned many to God, which is always to be the case, and proves that competent Spiritual leadership brings about the same in the people, truth, peace and equity.

Numbers 25:10-13 “The Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”

Malachi God’s chosen prophet gives instruction of what pleases God verse what displeases Him. We to as children of God we are required to remain faithful and learn to walk obediently in His sovereign Word. As believers of the Lord Jesus Christ we too need to listen and profit from this Old Testament teaching.

Last week, we heard how the priest had defiled, violated God’s house with the misuse of sacrifices, corruption had entered into the Sanctuary. Remember, they decided that any offering would be pleasing to God and it was not so. Are you ready, do you have ears to hear-“Listen” and secondly “set your hearts to honor my Name.”

Yet these priests had broken the covenant God had for them, Malachi 2:7-8 “For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth. But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,” says the Lord Almighty.”

A Good Priest: Is ready and mighty in speak the truth of scriptures; it is by truth Christ rules. He was chosen by God (1 Samuel 2:30), not man appointed.   He walked with God in Peace. He helped many loss souls from death and multitudes are in heaven. When a priest is upright many will be upright!

What God seeks for us to discover is in Verse 6 “True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin.”

God has given us the freedom of choice, to make either right or wrong decisions but I’m thankful that God is a God of second choices. Struggles spiritually, has wickedness crept in, has sin enslaved you, evil thoughts bombarding you we need to apply Ephesians 4:1”As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” Ephesians 6:11-12 “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

True Instruction:

Guard yourself, be cautious with your eyes and ears and monitor your mouth. Hebrews 4:12 “ Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.  For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

When we speak let the word of God flow through you as a willing vessel, let the Holy Spirit speak the message of salvation, declare eternal life is promised to all who believe in Jesus’ name. A warning those who profess to be servants of God we are about God’s business winning souls for the kingdom of heaven, building one another up in Jesus’ name not tearing new converts down.

Illustration: Instructions are hard to follow like run out into the street and play with your ball in traffic. Place your hand on the stove while mum is cooking. These are not the correct instructions look both ways before crossing the street, cross over and only cross if there is no traffic. Instruction is for our benefit so why not follow them.

John 3:31-35 “The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. 33 Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34 For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for Godgives the Spirit without limit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.”

Commune with the Lord:

“He walked with me” discipline oneself to spend time in the presence of the Lord, daily, lay time aside you’ll never regret it.

2 Corinthians 12:6 “ Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say,”

Self-control is one of the seeds of the fruit of the Spirit: faithfulness & gentleness are essential to have self-control, to have power over oneself and thus you are powerless and over whelmed by the passions that tug at and control them. Paul speak truthfulness and not of himself. Time is of the essence, take time to walk with the Lord.

Hymn # 140 Chorus

And He walks with me and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own,

And the joy we share as we tarry there, None other has ever known.

Austin Miles speaks of an intimate relationship like He never knew until he began to walk hand in hand with Jesus. Jesus desires for each of us to draw near and take Him by the hand and listen to His still voice and learn, to give ear to His word. As you walk cherish His love and companionship as He shares Himself with you. As we believer walk with Jesus you’ll be transformed more and more into His likeness.

Psalm 1:1-3 “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”

As we walk with Jesus two qualities that will develop in you and me are “Peace & Uprightness.”

Peace- image of wholeness, unity & harmony complete and sound. The absence of strife (Psalm 29:11).

“The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.”

Uprightness-Straight or level, moral quality, remains loyal to his commitments; or to the requirements of the Divine covenant (Psalm 119:128). The Old Testament promises many blessings to the person who is upright in heart.

Psalm 7:10 “My shieldis God Most High, who saves the upright in heart.
