Galatians 5:1, 16, 24-25 : “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery…..
We are to encourage one another to stand firm in the Lord Jesus Christ. Under the gospel we are granted citizenship! We are brought into a state of liberty, we owe this liberty to Jesus Christ, and it is He who has set us free! Amen. Jesus has delivered us from the yoke of slavery, sin. The Battle is at hand some of you might be struggling today the sinful nature, do not lose hope, we are instructed to “Stand Firm.” Joshua received God’s command in Joshua 1:5 “No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.” When the Lord spoke to Joshua, He promises Him no one, absolutely no one will be able to stand up against you. Take this promise for yourself, whether physical or spiritual. Jesus reminds the church of Galatia and us do not let the enemy rob and deceive you of the freedom that is rightfully yours in Christ. The Yoke of bondage Satan wants to place on you has been paid in full because Jesus died for us. What do we stand upon? Certainly it is not our sinful nature but upon the Word of God. Being planted, enriched, dwelling on the Word of God speaks of a foundation each of us should be in the process of building upon, being established in His Word!
1. Knowing God “If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being God’s child and having God as his Father. If this is not the thought that prompts and controls his worship and prayers and his whole outlook on life, it means that he does not understand Christianity very well at all.”
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh….
This is a battle that’s ongoing and it is real, the Apostle Paul directs our attention to this daily battle between the sinful nature and the Holy Spirit which leads us to abandon the carnal nature and live a life that is pleasing to God.
The duty recommended here for us is that we set ourselves to act under the guidance and influence of the Holy Spirit. We may battle the sinful nature but it is for you and me to determine who we live for. We depend on the Holy Spirit though we may not be freed from the stirrings of our corrupt nature, yet it shall not obtain dominion over us. The best antidote against poison of sin is to live by the Spirit.
Illustration: I am not alone, struggles, mind games Satan plays but realize, I do not dwell, I am set free, Jesus reigns but please continue to pray for me & I you.
James 3:16 “For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”
Temptation is a daily battle! Do not be deceived! Stomp on Satan immediately before he gets the upper hand. Don’t give him an inch or he’ll take all he can get.
Billy Sunday an American Evangelist – “Listen: I’m against sin. I’ll kick it as long as I’ve got a foot. I’ll fight it as long as I’ve got a fist. I’ll butt it as long as I’ve got a head. I’ll bite it as long as I’ve got a tooth. And when I’m old, fistless, footless, and toothless, I’ll gum it till I go home to glory and it goes home to perdition.”
Do you find your mind wandering dwelling on things that might or do hinder your walk with Christ, instead seekafter the Word that God, He intended us to seek out. There is no room for the sinful nature in a child that’s born again& Spirit filled. We need to seriously heed Paul’s warning: “I warn you as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the Kingdom of God.” (verses 19-21a).
24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Sacrificed, laid at the foot of the Cross, I surrender, Oh how we need a gentle reminder that when we confess our need for Jesus we died to self.
Bob Dylan an American Songwriter-“People seldom do what they believe in. They do what is convenient, then repent.”
It is no longer I that liveth Mark Hudson but who has control over this body, this mind , this soul it’s Jesus. Daily I find I need to surrender afresh the sinful nature, my struggle are handed over daily, take that evil seed and hand it over to God for I belong to the family of God, I desire more of Jesus and less of myself.
Galatians 6:1 “Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.”
2 Thessalonians 3:16 “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.”
Sincerely endeavoring to die to sin as Jesus had died for it; we have not yet obtained complete victory over the sinful nature. If we approve ourselves to be Christ’s we must take constant care to crucify the sinful nature , daily! Our Christianity obliges us not only to oppose the acts of the sinful nature but to bring forth the fruit of the Spirit too.
Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
An interesting verse, how does one keep in step with the Spirit? The fruits of the Spirit need to be operational in our lives. Step or Walk refers to your lifestyle; both life and holiness to be the work of the Holy Spirit .
Philippians 2:14-15 “Do everything without grumbling or arguing,15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky.”
1 John 3:1 “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”
1 Thessalonians 5:5-6 “You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.”
The Holy Spirit introduces us to salvation through Jesus Christ, He introduces us into a life of power and victory. Matthew Henry pens these words “That the Spirit of Christ is a privilege bestowed on all children of God. Let us show evidence our good principles by good practices and live according to the Spirit.
Colossians 3:12-15“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”
"Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest unto your souls." - Mathew 11:28
