John 5:16-21; 24
“So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. 19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it….. Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.
Who are you fooling, sure we can read scripture all day long, go through the motion of acting religious, fulfilling all the rites that go along with church but if you don’t have Jesus abiding in your heart how can you expect to receive eternal life.
Joni Eareckson Tada: Just think: Every promise God has ever made finds fulfillment in Jesus. God doesn’t just give us grace; He gives us Jesus, the Lord of grace. If it’s peace, it’s only found in Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Even life itself is found in the Resurrection and the Life. Christianity isn’t all that complicated…it’s Jesus.
See this is the problem that the Teachers of the Law, the Pharisees had; they practiced daily the rites but lacked the insight, the discernment of understanding Jesus Teaching. Unless one has accepted Jesus as Lord, having the Holy Spirit dwelling within; one’s actions are futile to receiving eternal life.
See the Pharisees and the Teachers of the Law only heard the words of Jesus but lacked the knowledge of His teaching. Their misunderstanding always led to their way of thinking “let’s think of a way to kill him.” Men who are not truly open to receiving Christ, are not interested in His mandate. When Jesus speaks the truth, they are only interested in partial truth, meaning it suits their purpose.
Yet we have a beautiful insight into Nicodemus who approach Jesus at Night, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with Him (John 3:2). Jesus declares “I tell you the Truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”
Like Father, Like Son: Traits, characteristics, She has her mother’s eyes or oh you’re just like your father, a chip off the block. I’ve always taken this to be a compliment, or Oh you’re Eric’s son. Our identity is crucial and knowing who we are. Am I just Eric’s son, no I am a Child of God, Born again, saved, filled with the Holy Spirit, speak with tongues with the Call of God on my life. Yet there is a part of me that’s crying out do I know who I am? What is my potential? And I hear an inner voice crying louder to me do you know who I AM? Have you lost your identity or have you discovered your true identity?
Jesus has no agenda of his own, His strength, His power lays within the Father, His Heavenly Father. “He can do nothing by himself” Jesus does not deny who His Father is because He knows him because of the relationship as His Son. Jesus words “I tell you the Truth” in other words mark them, they are sovereign, and they are gospel.
Jesus is our Mediator-speaking on our behalf, this intimates that things are declared: Very awesome and great; Very Sure; Matters purely divine Revelation.
Illustration: A wedding ceremony:
“Marriage is the sacred and lifelong union of a man and a woman
Who give themselves to each other in love and trust.
It signifies the mystery of the union between Christ and the church.
Marriage is given that a husband and wife may enrich and encourage each other in every part of their life together.”
As a Husband and Wife complement each other, in every area of their life together, it’s not me or I, their union is built together with the help of Christ.
When we speak of the Trinity, three in one, individual persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, but equal as one. Our statement of Faith describes: We Believe that there is one God, eternally existent in the Persons of the Holy Trinity.
The Son can do nothing-it’s not a one man team, it’s not about me, puffing ones self-up, each have an equal role to play.
Christ Giver of Life: when Jesus speak of life, key words are “to those who He is pleased to,” life breathed back into believers, poured back into churches, Christ will give providing He is pleased too. When we ask for life we are seeking for a spiritual awakening, we are believing, pressing in, seeking after the Lord, for revival, an out pouring of His Spirit that will transform live forever.
Life is given when we seek to dwell in his presence, believe to seek the lost, the sick, find salvation through Jesus Christ.
Jesus is looking for us to intercede for the lost, those who abandoned the faith, Christ desires to breathe life into those who are dead in their transgressions, their sin.
Jesus speaks of life, of two resurrections, now being raised, delivered from the depth of sin to a life of righteousness. The second resurrection is yet to come, “a time is coming” Christ tells all must appear before the judge.
Give Me an Ear: How many want to be condemned, I have good news for each of you today, Jesus speaks the truth a twofold lesson. First, hear my word and secondly believe in who sent me will have eternal life.
How many have heard these words “He who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches” Revelation 3:6.
This morning the bottom line Jesus declares a time is coming, drawing near, crucial time, are we willing to listen, Jesus says there is an urgency, “The dead who are in their graves will respond to his voice, how will you respond. Jesus gives two clear instructions. Hear, and Live!
Henry David Thoreau:penned these words: “It is not when I am going to meet Him, but when I am just turning away and leaving Him alone, that I discover that God is.”
Jesus offers us all life, His desire is for each of us to have it to the fullest, complete package lacking absolutely nothing.
As we come to a close this morning let me ask one question: When does Jesus Speak to You? Do we listening?
I believe God talks to us all the time but often we are too busy to listen. The bottom line is, let’s use Jesus words as we wait for him to return.
John 5:30b “for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.”
"Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest unto your souls." - Mathew 11:28
